Stratford is a town in Fairfield County that is approximately 19.9 square miles in size and is situated on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Housatonic River. It borders the towns of Milford, Bridgeport, Trumbull and Shelton. Settled way back in 1639, this is a town that is rich in history as it was one of two of the principal settlements in southwestern Connecticut.
The median housing cost in Stratford is $285,000, with the median income being $66,162. There are over 21,000 households and the median age is 43 years. Most of the homes in Stratford are residential single family homes, but there are several condominium complexes as well, such as: Tudor Ridge, Far Mill River, Deerfield Woods and more. Also, Oronoque Village and Maple Oak Reserve are senior complexes that are age restricted to the 55 and older community.
With it's shoreline accessibility, Stratford offers two public beach parks. One is Long Beach, an "unimproved" beach, that is 1.5 miles in length and is located in the Lordship area. There are no permanent bathroom facilities or or food concessions. Short Beach, on the other hand, is a 30 acre beach front property that includes picnic areas, ball fields, playground, skate park, golf course, tennis courts and courts for basketball, paddleball and volleyball. There is also a concession stand, showers and an indoor restroom. One of the most popular parks in Stratford is Boothe Memorial Park & Museum, which is 32 acres of land across from the Housatonic River and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The grounds are open free to the public year round and tours of the historic buildings can be arranged. The facilities are also available to rent for group functions.
Stratford is also home to Sikorsky Aircraft, the birthplace of the American helicopter industry. Sikorsky Aircraft is the nation's leading manufacturer of helicopter's that designs and produces state-of-the-art helicopter's for the military and commercial operations. It is also one of the largest employer's in the area. Sikorsky Memorial Airport, which is named after Igor Sikorsky, the founder of Sikorsky Aircraft, is located in Stratford but is owned by the City of Bridgeport.
The public school system in Stratford is comprised of nine elementary schools for students up to grade 6 which are Chapel Street, Franklin, Lordship, Nichols, Second Hill Lane, Stratford Academy: Victoria Soto School (PreK - 2), Stratford Academy: Johnson House (Grades 3-6), Eli Whitney and Wilcoxson. Flood Middle School and Wooster Middle School are for the students in grades 7 and 8. There are also two high schools, Bunnell High School and Stratford High School.
With easy access to most major highways, Stratford is an ideal location for commuting. It is directly off of I-95 and the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) as well as Route 8 and Route 25. It's only about an hours drive into New York City or take Metro-North Commuter Railroad out of Stratford Station for an easier commute.
